Amazon EPR verification reaches every EU member state on 12 August 2026. Article 45 of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 requires online marketplaces to verify producers' packaging EPR registration information before allowing sales, in each member state where products are first made available. Amazon has enforced every comparable deadline on or around day one since 2022 — on 18 August 2025 it deactivated non-compliant battery offers in four countries the same day. What is Amazon EPR verification under the PPWR?

It is a legal duty on the marketplace, not a policy choice. Article 45 of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 obliges online platforms to verify producers' registration information before allowing sales — the seller-side obligations are mapped on our PPWR hub.

From 12 August 2026, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 makes online marketplaces verify that every producer selling packaged goods through them holds packaging EPR registration in each member state where those goods are first made available. Amazon already runs this check in two countries: German LUCID numbers have been enforced on amazon.de since 2022 and French identifiers since the end of that year. The PPWR turns that two-country exception into the 27-country rule, and it does so for all platforms at once rather than leaving verification to each marketplace's own calendar. Producers — explicitly including non-EU distance sellers — carry the registration duty itself, while the marketplace carries the duty to check it, which is why a missing number now has two enforcement paths: the national authority and the platform's own compliance gate. No grace period softens either path.

The enforcement calendar: Amazon acts on day one

Six EPR-style deadlines have landed on EU marketplaces since June 2022. The pattern is uniform: announcement, registration-number collection, then enforcement on or around the date itself.

Amazon's enforcement record covers six separate compliance deadlines between 15 June 2022 and 31 March 2026, and on each occasion it acted on schedule. Germany's WEEE wave followed through 2023 against sellers missing stiftung EAR registration, and the Battery Regulation date of 18 August 2025 produced same-day deactivations across four member states, with Temu and TikTok Shop holding the identical line. Nothing in that sequence suggests a soft launch for the largest EPR deadline of them all. Two waves in the record were packaging-specific — LUCID in 2022 and France's identifier six months later — which makes packaging the best-rehearsed category on the list, not an untested frontier.

What sellers should expect in Seller Central

Amazon has not published its final PPWR workflow, so the honest forecast is the pattern from six previous deadlines: per-country registration-number fields, escalating email notices, then enforcement against listings whose numbers are missing or unverifiable on the date.

Seller Central's compliance workflow has collected packaging EPR registration numbers for Germany and France since 2022, and the PPWR's arrival on 12 August 2026 extends that per-country logic to every member state of sale. Based on the six precedents above, sellers should expect four things: number fields opening per country in the compliance dashboard, deadline emails that begin months out and intensify in the final weeks, validation against national registers rather than a tick-box (LUCID checks already work this way), and suppression or deactivation of offers that cross the date without verifiable numbers. The France 2022 episode adds a fifth possibility — auto-enrolment into paid programmes such as Pay on Behalf where they exist, with the cost landing on the seller. Preparing for a gentler version than this record would be planning against the evidence.

Which countries, and what evidence you need

Every EU member state where your packaged products are first made available — FBA placement and distance sales included. The evidence is one national packaging registration number per country, issued from the registers operating today.

The PPWR's registration-format implementing act is running late and national registers phase in through 2027, but from 12 August 2026 the verification duty runs on the infrastructure that exists now, country by country. The European Commission's packaging-waste guidance confirms obligations apply per member state; in practice that means a German number, a French number, an Italian number — never one EU number. Screenshots of pending applications have never satisfied an Amazon compliance gate. Gather the company extract, VAT numbers and packaging weights by material once, and every national file draws on the same evidence pack.

Who is exposed, and how to be ready

Most marketplace sellers have at least one unregistered country of sale today. The fix is mechanical — register everywhere you sell — and the window still works if the slowest registrations are filed by 30 June 2026.
